WORLD FOOD CRISIS

It is a sad irony the world produces more than enough food for everyone yet so many people go hungry. Heck, in my little country of less than 6 million people, we produce enough food for 40 million.

Latest figures from the UN suggest 673 million people suffer chronic hunger. (8.3% of global pop.) On top of those pour souls, an additional 2.3 billion (yes, billion), are classed as having moderate or severe food insecurity.

Combined, that equates to more than a third of the global population. Surely that statement requires a pause. One third of the entire world.

And yet, there's enough resources on the planet. In fact, one quarter of all food is currently wasted!

UN estimates suggest the World Population by 2050 will be around 10 billion, meaning another 2 billion are coming to dinner in just 25 years time.

We have a major catastrophe unfolding now and probably for the future.

In 2026 the UN spent around 13-billion through the WFP and provided assistance to 124 million people.

These numbers got me thinking. 13-billion.

Uncle Sam spent the same amount in the first two weeks of the war on Iran.

51-days on, and the current estimated cost is 50-80 billion dollars. Three to six times the current WFP budget. This same money would feed 372 million to 744 million people for an entire year. Tragically, it is also almost exactly the number of people suffering chronic hunger.

Projections for the Iran war now exceed US$ 1 Trillion.

If that sounds ridiculous, consider George Bush & co spent more than 5 trillion on the Iraq war, more than 20 years ago. (despite initial estimates of only $50-60 billion.)

At the time, the UN budget for the World Food Program was only $1.7B. Put another way, the Bush Administration could have instantly funded 35 years worth of the WFP for the 60-odd billion they estimated the Iraq war would cost.

In reality, they could have probably ended World hunger with the actual 5-trillion spent.

Something is drastically wrong here folks.

It costs the WFP around 50 cents to provide a meal.

We have the resources to feed everyone. I titled this piece "how to feed 4-million people by doing nothing":

One US Tomahawk missile costs 2 million dollars. One missile.

Surely there is something that can be done.
